25 décembre At PDX AirportI am at the Portland International Airport, waiting for board. The wireless internet here is good, so I can post this blog smoothly. It is a little exciting for the Christmas trip, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Seattle and Vancouver. I just found that I did pretty well on last term. I got two A- and one A, with GPA 3.78. I should say this is beyond my expectation. This gives me another reason to have a wild winter vacation.
The city of Portland is beautiful, and I saw Chinatown luckily. When I was on the MAX Light Rail, I really thought I was flying home. I miss the Chinese food. I miss my friends.
JoJo is going home in early January, good for her. Enjoy the Spring Festival everybody! 16 décembre A week’s home-stay lifeI paid a visit to my friend Daniel Paeth’s house at Toledo last week, and experienced a simple life in an American family. Dan’s father, John, is very tall, and so is Dan. His mom is a typical American mother like we saw on TV. Dan has two sisters, Molly and Sarah. They are both in high school, and both play basketball. Maybe it’s because they are tall inherited from their father.
What impressed me most is the Chinese friend John introduced to me, Xin Liu. Xin is from Qingdao, and he is doing export business on oysters at Newport. I saw a lot of Mexican workers in his firm.
When I saw the Pacific Ocean at Newport Beach on Wednesday, I deeply realized that China is just at the other end of the ocean. I miss all of you. Dan’s father is very grateful that Dan and I put their Christmas lights on and built up his trailer. He paid us $50 each, and soon I contributed this money to the Casino at Lincoln City, hehe. It was very fun playing Roulette in a real Casino.
I am very happy for this trip; I like Dan’s family, Xin, especially the musicians I met on the Christmas party in Dan’s neighborhood.
Las Vegas, Disneyland, and Hollywood, I am coming next week! 26 octobre First MidtermFirst midterm today, on statistical methods. Personlly, I think this course is very usefull and practical for all science disciplines. I finally understand where p-value comes from and how to assess a treatment effect. We will talk about T-test for this whole term. All kinds of situations make you confusion, at least for me. But I like this course anyway.
The study atmosphere here is quite different from that in China. The higher degree you are in , the more busy you will be, just the opposite way from graduate school in China.
I live with many funny American guys, and it is an interesting life for me. I have been the Treasure of our house for a week. Making budget is important, and I did roughly well. I got reduction in rent because of this work, only $250/month, including meals and all other stuffs. Awesome life here, but I really want to eat SHUAN YANG ROU!!! |
